How To: PRAGUE

Swimming in medieval culture and breathtaking buildings, Czech Republic's most popular city offers anything your heart desires. From a good beer to a great view, you'll never be bored wandering the streets of Prague. Cobbled streets line the city centre and in the Winter they are covered with a thick blanket of snow. If you're looking for a cultural holiday, a place with great views or even just a good, cheap beer then Prague is the city for you.

HOTEL:

We actually stayed in an Airbnb for this trip, We wanted somewhere we could cook for myself if need's be. We stayed in a beautiful apartment right around the corner from Wencelas Square in a cosy but modern apartment. The host was great and the apartment was such a great place to have breakfast and head out for the day.

FLIGHTS:

Our flights weren't too pricey for the time of year we were flying. In January it's going to be a bit more expensive to fly to typical Winter destinations as everyone is wanting to go but at only roughly £26 for one person one way, we got a really good deal! Once again, EasyJet came through for us and we got great service the entire flight, as well as comfortable seats and an update from the pilot a couple of times about our flights. We flew at night so it was really dark but the views of the city from above when it's all lit up are stunning.

TRAVEL:

To be honest, we were pretty close to everything and didn't really need to travel to many places as the furthest we had to walk was about an hour and it's well worth walking if you can. This way, you get to see the beautiful city sights. If you don't fancy walking, however, there are trams all around the city and you can get anywhere you need to via them. An adult transport ticket is 32 CZK if you want to access any zone of the city. These cover trams, buses that travel the city and the underground Metro. Our Airbnb host arranged our airport cab pick up for only 500 CZK which is around £16.00, if you're thinking about getting a cab that's what it should cost you and if anyone's trying to charge you over the £20 mark then they're definitely a rip off.

The cheapest option from the Airport to the city centre is the bus. This is the same ticket as above at only 32 CZK and it's every six minutes from 4:23AM to 23:42PM, and they run every day including the weekend. With the bus, you'll need to take the 119 to Nadrazi Veleslavin then transfer to Subway line A to get to the middle of town. You can get a slightly more expensive Airport Express bus which takes you to the city centre, a ticket will set you back 60 CZK but it's way more convenient but it only runs between 5:30AM and 9:00PM.

BUDGET:

After a £60 shop we were set for breakfasts and most lunches, we went out for quite a few beer runs and following tradition, had a meal at Hard Rock Cafe. Our budget didn't exceed £60 per person per day which covered beer, sightseeing and trying traditional food.

FOOD & DRINK:

Beer actually isn't as cheap as everyone says out there unless you're prepared to go to the more back street pubs that are out of the city. Saying that, the beer is still cheap as the most expensive beer we found was at Hard Rock Cafe, where drinks are usually more expensive! I'd recommend visiting the Train Cafe, where food is literally delivered by model trains on railway tracks! Fat Cat Brewery, Hard Rock Cafe and The Irish Times bar for good food, good beer and a great time. We tried a traditional Czech pastry, Trdelnik which is a kind of spit cake, you've gotta try one if you're in Prague!

SIGHTS:

Where do I begin? Every turn of a corner is breathtaking. A visit to the astronomical clock is a must, as is Charles Bridge, Prague Castle and Cathedral in the city centre and Speculum Alchemae. I also recommend doing a Ghost Tour, our one was great and it didn't include any gimmicks or jump scares, just properly creepy stories of the city as we strolled the cobbled streets on a rainy evening with our guide. It was really insightful and so entertaining. He even recommended us the best beer!

WHEN DO I VISIT?

We visited mid January where it was snowy and cold, however Prague is also beautiful in the summer too with temperatures reaching up to 18 degrees and the sun shining beautifully on the fairytale city. However, it was truly magical visiting when it was freezing cold and snowy, there was something truly special about dressing up in our hats, scarves and gloves to play in the snow on the way to a night out or dinner.

MY THOUGHTS:

Prague is a beautiful city full of little hidden wonders and huge looming medieval buildings, perfect for anyone looking for something different to look at and to experience a difficult culture. Remember to check how cheap you are really getting things for as the currency difference can be confusing and you can be fooled into thinking beer or meals are cheaper in some areas than others but if you do plenty of research and plan ahead, Prague is a perfect city break.

Until next time...
